Kingdom Bikes FOIA DH Hardtail

FOIA - a legend is born

I designed Foia to be a full-on big jump/downhill long travel hardtail. Living and riding in Portugal means when I ride a hardtail I need it to be able to take on big rocks on mountain singletracks that are found all around the Algarve. The Foia gets it's name from the area on top of the Algarves highest peak Monchique.

The frame is designed around a 140mm travel fork, with a static head angle is 67.5 degrees which is slack enough for big jumps and high speed downhill but with short 420mm chainstays it will be sharp through the corners.

The properties of titanium have been used to there best in this design to get a really light weight but incredibly strong frame with enough spring in the back end to take the edge off the big hits.

An ISCG05 mount has been included for a two chain-ring setup and bash guard for rocks that cover the Algarve but it would be just as at home in the Alps.

Most of the riding here is technical singletrack with a few jumps and drops thrown in, the trails are usually bone dry, dusty and really quick.

The frame design has allowed for 2.5 tyres to be fitted to soak up any drops. The curved downtube and seat stays will allow the ti tubing to use its almost infinite spring life in taking big hits but the headtube area is heavily reinforced so you never need to worry about failure.

The frame will be stiff and light enough to climb really well. The dropouts are 6mm thick and planar to make them as strong as possible.

The first prototype is currently being welded up in China as I write, so as soon as it's riding I'll update with a full ride report.

Savage frame, the knuckle duster dropoutsare deadly. Whats the saet angle?

Adam says: 12.03.2010

Is it the same tapered headtube as the Vendetta?

Nick says: 12.03.2010

one more question on the dropouts - are they 'removable' or replaceable? Good luck with this frame - can't wait to see it in the flesh!

Agnete says: 12.03.2010

can i get it in pink?

Jim says: 12.03.2010

Seat angle is 73 degrees.

It is the same head tube as the Vendetta, they are really strong.

The dropout on the prototype is fixed, but they are made from 6mm thick Titanium so they are unlikely to bend and Titanium can be straightened without any real loss of strength, that combined with the new low profile mechs and mech savers it might stay like this.

mmmmmmm sexy curves.

All these bikes are going to be immortalised in the hall of r-a-d I predict.

Great looking frame! Loving the headtube and overall look of the frame.
It would be nice to see it with maxle dropouts for those of us already on a 135x12 rear wheel and to get that added stiffness needed if you want to hammer it silly.

Chris says: 16.05.2010

Great idea Marcus. We could offer this as an option. I've recently put a 10mm bolt through on the Vendetta and it feels pretty cool with the already stiff ti back end.

Be great to see a CAD drawing of 12mm Maxle on the Foia... Jim, hint hint....

Rich says: 29.05.2010

would love to see that with a rear maxle & to take a 30.9 seat tube for an adjustable seatpost !

Also , what is the BB height ?

Rich says: 29.05.2010

given the ISG mount , do I take it it would work with a hammerschmidt ?

Chris says: 02.06.2010

Rich, the BB is between 12.5" and 12.7" depending on tyre size.

Production runs of the Foia will have a 30.9 seat tube for drop seatposts and the ISCG mount will take a hammerschmidt...

we really like the frame ideas you sent through as well. I'll drop you an email about developing it. Ta.

Jim says: 08.06.2010

Rich , the frame does take a hammerschmidt, I got the CAD design envelope and designed the frame with it in mind. I'm working on a couple of mods that have been suggested including the axle and I'll see how they package/look.

Saxon says: 11.07.2010

cool looking bike man. can i ask though - you say it's designed around a 140mm fork - can i prezume i can put me 160mm on it? it will just make it steeper at the front, right? cheers mate

Ben says: 09.08.2010

where do i send my idea to and can it be whatever make like scott or trek.

Chris says: 09.08.2010

Ben send it through to frankenride@kingdombike.com and someone will look at it. Don't make it too much like a Scott or a Trek we don't like being legaled that much :)

As the above comments - 160mm forks such as 36's and Lyriks (Pike's are not great), Hammershmickle compatible, and 30.9 or 31.6 for uppy-downy posts.
I would also drop the top tube for more clearance - I realise this can mean having to run a really long seatpost or have a stub at the top (like on an Evil Soverign) but for me the low slung top tube prevents me banging my knees when negotiating tricky terrain.
Your first review is interesting... if you've not found the limits of Pike forks and single ply maxxis tyres your not ridding a hardtail hard enough :o)

Chris says: 12.08.2010

Hey Pimp Messiah. 31.6 def. I forgot to put that in the review....

I also like a sloping top tube, I had a few discussions about it and think it could be neat to drop it an inch, Jim will probably make some alterations I'm sure after riding it.

I did want to ride on 160mm Lyriks but it was designed around 140mm so I thought I'd give it a go on the Pikes first. First time on a Pike to my shame but I liked them I have to say. Dual ply all the way.

Would you pref it was designed around a 160mm fork?

There's a few more reviews in the pipeline as well?

In fact why not take it for a spin and make a review yourself, we're always up for that. Email me if you want me to set it up for you chris@kingdombike.com

Only came across your site a few weeks ago and it,s refreshing to see you guys are really into taking onboard ideas and comments from Joe Blow.

A Ti Sovereignis what a huge amount of people are after as the original is the dogs but a wee bit heavy to say the least.

I am sure you guys could do he same in Titanium around the 2kg mark easy.

BUILD IT THEY WILL COME

:o)
